This is the next phase of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s ‘Go for your life’ School Canteen and Other School Food Services Policy that has been implemented in schools since 2007. This policy applies to food services within the school environment, for example on-site canteens, external lunch order services, school events such as celebrations and sports days, vending machines and foods used in curriculum activities. The policy encourages a whole-of-school approach and should be reflected across all areas of the school that involves food, such as fundraising.Confectionery is classified as an ‘extra’ food in the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating as it is not necessary to consume in order to obtain the essential nutrients that the body needs and can contribute large amounts of excess energy and sugar. Research has established that consumption of confectionery can have negative implications on a child’s health including: excess weight gain, tooth decay, diarrhoea, malnutrition and growth impedance. Australian children today consume excessive amounts of confectionery and are exposed to increased opportunities to consume these foods in their daily lives. Providing healthy snacks through school food services is important as children spend a high proportion of their time at school and schools are a key place for modelling and learning about healthy lifestyle choices. The ‘Go for your life’ School Confectionery Guidelines assist schools to identify products that are considered to be confectionery, and include rationale for the guidelines, a definition of confectionery, a comprehensive checklist of confectionery items, and tips to successfully implement the guidelines. Download a copy of the confectionery policy and guidelines from the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development website. This confectionery policy sits within the existing 'Go for your life’ School Canteen and Other School Food Services Policy, which provides details the full range foods and drinks suitable for supply in schools.
