Kids - 'Go for your life'

The Kids – ‘Go for your life’ program has been replaced by a new and expanded health promoting schools and early childhood services initiative.

The Victorian Prevention and Health Promotion Achievement Program will support schools and early childhood services to create safe, healthy and friendly environments for learning.

The new initiative will include the promotion of physical, mental and social health and wellbeing. The scope will also be expanded to offer support to secondary schools, in addition to early childhood education and care services and primary and special development schools.

The Achievement Program is in the final stages of development and will be rolled out during 2012. All Victorian early childhood services and schools will be invited to join and will be able to access the latest tools, resources and guidance to achieve health promoting status. Kids - ‘Go for your life’ awarded schools and services will have advanced standing in the new program.

Creating healthy environments for children and young people

Cancer Council Victoria is working with the state government to develop a new health promoting schools and services initiative for Victoria to be rolled-out in 2012.

From 2006 – 2011, Cancer Council Victoria and Diabetes Australia – Vic worked together to create healthy environments for children aged 0–12 in Victoria. This was predominantly through the management and delivery of the Kids – ‘Go for your life' program, a state-wide initiative funded by the state government.

The program aimed to reduce childhood obesity through the promotion of healthy eating and physical activity in childcare, kindergarten, family daycare and primary schools. Kids – ‘Go for your life' achieved significant capacity and commitment across Victoria, with over 60% of primary schools and early childhood services as members, and over 500 health professionals involved.

Who we are and what we did

Primary schools and early childhood services are important places where children learn to develop healthy eating and physical activity routines. Kids - 'Go for your life' supported children's settings to promote healthy lifestyles to children aged 0-12 through an award-based program.

The program was funded by the Victorian State Government and managed by Diabetes Australia - Vic and Cancer Council Victoria. It was based on six key messages that make healthy eating and physical activity a fun and engaging learning experience.
