Professionals Home > Active living > Activity type > Incidental/Recreational Activity > Programs > Romp and Chomp Romp and Chomp Romp & Chomp (2005-2008) was a whole of community-based obesity prevention demonstration project within the City of Greater Geelong. It targeted preschool children (~12,000 children under 5 years of age) in long day care, family day care and preschool settings. The project aimed to achieve sustainable change in areas of policy, socio-cultural, physical and economic environments. Key messages focussed on daily water, daily active play, daily fruit and vegetables and less screen time. It was completed in 2010 and the results showed that the interventions in Romp and Chomp improved the diets of the children, the children were drinking considerably less sweet drinks and there was a reduction in the prevalence in childhood overweight and obesity. A final report (933kb, pdf) and a set of project process reports which support the actions taken with each project objective are provided. In addition, a range of resources were developed as part of the Romp and Chomp project and these are available from Kids-‘Go for your life’. The processes and interventions used and results/lessons of this project continue to be meaningful for examining policy and implementation approaches to obesity prevention in children.
