The checklist is designed for use by members of the community, so that they can identify issues of concern in their local neighbourhoods which may act as a barrier to walking for recreation or transport. If the checklist identifies particular problems, short terms solutions for individuals are suggested, as well as long term solutions which require the formation of partnerships with stakeholders such as local councils, police, schools, local media and private business to make the local neighbourhood a friendlier place to walk. This may be useful for organizations designing whole of community strategies to increase the participation in physical activity or active transport connecting the neighbourhood.
