What drinks can I serve?
From the start of 2007, high sugar content drinks including soft drinks, energy drinks, sports drinks and flavoured mineral waters should not be supplied through Government school food services.
Everyday (green) drinks
- Low/reduced fat milk (plain or flavoured) – recommended serve size of 250 – 300ml or less
- Low/reduced fat soy milk (plain or flavoured) – recommended serve size of 250 – 300ml or less (choose calcium enriched versions)
- Water
Select Carefully (amber) drinks
- Full-fat milk (plain or flavoured) – recommended serve size of 250 – 300ml or less
- Full-fat soy milk (plain or flavoured) – recommended serve size of 250 – 300ml or less (choose calcium enriched versions)
- 100% fruit juices - recommended serve size 125ml, no more than 250ml
- Sports waters which are clear in colour and with moderate-kJ (less than 300kJ and 100mg sodium per serve)
- Artificially sweetened drinks – this is to assist secondary schools in phasing out full sugar soft drinks. Ideally, schools should not sell soft drinks at all. We do not recommend that schools start supplying artificially sweetened drinks if they are not already doing so.
Occasionally (red) drinks
- Fruit juice drinks with less than 99% fruit juice content
- Cordials
- Sports waters which are coloured and/or more than 300kJ and 100mg sodium per serve
- Sports drinks

Confused about which drinks you can serve?
For specific brands of commercial drinks that are suitable for provision in school food services, refer to the buyers guide.
Note that due to differences between state canteen guidelines, these buyers guides may list some coloured carbonated waters which are not suitable for provision under the Victorian ‘Go for your life’ School Canteens and other School Food Services Policy.
