International Healthy Parks Healthy People Congress
The Inaugural International Healthy Parks Healthy People Congress will explore how nature significantly contributes to our wellbeing and broader societal benefits. It is expected to attract over 1000 delegates from Australia and around the world.

Participants will come from many different sectors including urban planning, community development, physical and mental health, tourism, education, recreation, ecology and park management (urban and protected area). This diversity of perspectives will allow delegates to understand the benefits of nature through the eyes of many.

Who will be presenting at the Congress?
Over two hundred sessions across five days the Congress will raise awareness of recent research, highlight case studies and facilitate discussion regarding the advantages of, and opportunities for, future collaboration across sectors at local through to global levels.

Confirmed keynote speakers include:
  • Richard Louv (USA) – Author "Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder".
  • Steve Coleman (USA) - Executive Director of Parks and People (Washington DC, United States) and Trustee of the City Parks Alliance.
  • Dr William Bird (UK) – Senior Health Advisor to Natural England, United Kingdom.
  • Kathleen Frith (USA) – Assistant Director Centre for Health and the Global Environment, Harvard Medical School.
  • Professor Tim Flannery (AUST) - Mammalogist, palaeontologist, conservationist, global warming activist and author of “The Weather Makers: The history and future impact of climate change”.
  • Aaron Bernstein MD (USA)– Co-Author of “Sustaining life: how human health depends on biodiversity”.
  • Janet Holmes à Court AC (AUST) – Successful Australian Business Woman, Australian Living Treasure and chairperson of the Australian Children's Television Foundation.
  • Dr Howard Frumkin (USA) - Director of the National Center for Environmental Health and Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • Professor Rob Moodie (AUST) - Chair of Global Health at the Nossal Institute for Global Health - University of Melbourne, chair OF National Preventative Health Task Force, chair of Technical Advisory Panel of the Gates Foundation’s funded Indian HIV prevention program Avahan.
  • Gil Penalosa (CANADA) – Executive Director of Walk and Bike for Life in Canada and Senior Associate with New York City’s Project for Public Spaces.

Early bird ticket sales will open in October 2009. You can register your early interest and receive notification and update by leaving your details on the registration page on the Healthy Parks Healthy People website.

This will be a memorable event with inspirational speakers, innovative techniques to involve delegates, creative workshop and discussion sessions, enjoyable networking opportunities and social activities. With the focus on nature, some sessions will be held in outdoor settings.

Who has provided Congress endorsement?
The event has the endorsement of the International Conservation Union (IUCN), the UN World Tourism Organisation, Natural England, Deakin University, Vic Health, Parks Forum, beyondblue, Parks Victoria and the Australian Government.
