Hot Food
Hot foods are especially appreciated by children in the winter months and are a great way to include vegetables when salad and sandwich sales drop. Be sure to include some nutritious hot choices on your winter menu. Provide variety on the menu by offering one different rotating healthy hot dish each week, rather then a large selection of hot foods on the standard menu as this will allow you to keep preparation time and ingredients required at a minimum.
Traditionally many of the hot foods served in canteens have been high fat, “heat and serve” convenience foods such as pies and sausage rolls. Nutritious and appealing hot foods which are low in fat and contain vegetables can be quick and easy to prepare, even in a canteen with limited facilities. Try the ideas below:
- Commercially prepared hot food choices can be made more nutritious and in line with the Australian Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents by;
- Adding extra fresh vegetables, for example, topping commercially made pizzas with extra vegetables like capsicum, mushrooms and pumpkin
- Include them in a meal deal which is accompanied with salad or fresh fruit
- Choose low/reduced fat products
- Choose products from registered canteen buyers guides
- One pot dishes like stir-fries and fried rice are quick, easy and cost effective hot food choices.
